The white bark pine lives in the high country, at or above treeline. These sentinels of the Rockies grow in the most severe conditions that wind and weather and substrate can create. There is nothing like the spiraling sinew found in the grain of their exposed branches and trunks- such a testament to their strength and perseverance. And their cones are a key food for the Clark’s Nutcracker, who collects and hides them by the thousands each summer and fall. Grizzly bears obtain massive amounts of calories by finding and raiding the seed caches made by the Clark’s Nutcrackers. Dozen of researchers are working on the ground to understand why populations of whitebark pine continue to decrease- is the white pine blister rust? Is it the climate changes? Why now?

Please join me in honoring and celebrating the whitebark pine.
